Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do is the form of Martial art that was developed and taught by one of the greatest masters of all time – Bruce Lee. This form of Martial art involves a perfect co-ordination between the body and the mind with emphasis on the spiritual element. Jeet Kune Do came out of another style of Kung Fu called the Jun Fan Gung Fu. According to Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do is not another style of Martial art, it is a complete form of Martial art that has inherited what is required and "casting off what is useless" according to Lee's philosophy.

Jeet Kune Do shares a lot of its principals with other arts. Those who study Wing Chun will see a lot of things taken directly from it. It has borrowed a lot things from other arts such as footwork from both fencing and boxing, grappling from Judo and so on, but has a lot of unique perspectives of its own. Jeet Kune Do also emphasizes being physically fit, but most of all, the number one rule of Jeet Kune Do is to use whatever works.

JKD uses Economy of motion that you use no wasted movement. That is to say, you make only the motions that are effective and necessary. Do not over extend, or follow through to far after a punch, it will leave you open. If you are able to retract quicker you can attack again quicker, or be ready to defend.

Bruce Lee, and thus JKD, was heavily influenced by European boxing and fencing. Although the backbone concepts (such as centerline, vertical punching, and forward pressure) come from Wing Chun, Lee stopped using the Wing Chun stances in favor of what he considered to be more fluid/flexible fencing and boxing stances.

Lee stated that they allowed him to "flow" rather than being stuck in stances. For instance, instead of using footwork to position the body for maximum fighting position vis-a-vis the opponent, JKD uses flowing "entries" that do not require "bridges" from Wing Chun.

Bruce Lee wanted to create a martial art that was unbounded and free. Later during the development of Jeet Kune Do, he would expand that notion and include the art for personal development, not just to become a better fighter.
